Spin Transfer Torque Driven Coupled Oscillators for Self-Oscillating Radio- Frequency Mixers
نویسنده
چکیده
magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) devices are emerging as a possible replacement for complementary metal-oxide semiconductors for radio-frequency (RF) signal generation. Advantages include low power consumption, small device area, and large frequency tunability. This paper shows that single devices cannot achieve the necessary noise performance for RF applications. Various coupling mechanisms are explored to show that, by coupling more than two oscillators, a significant improvement in phase noise is possible. Such coupled STOs can be used as self-oscillating RF mixers. Critical mixer performance parameters, including conversion gain, output power, and linearity, are discussed.

Mutual synchronization of spin torque nano-oscillators through a long-range and tunable electrical coupling scheme
The concept of spin-torque-driven high-frequency magnetization dynamics, allows the potential construction of complex networks of non-linear dynamical nanoscale systems, combining the field of spintronics and the study of non-linear systems. In the few previous demonstrations of synchronization of several spin-torque oscillators, the short-range nature of the magnetic coupling that was used has...
متن کاملGeometry Optimization of Spin-Torque Oscillators Composed of Two MgO-MTJs with a Shared Free Layer
New types of spintronics devices utilizing all-electrical magnetization manipulation by current, such as spin-torque transfer RAM and spin-torque oscillators, have been developed based on MgO magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with a large magneto-resistance ratio [1]. Spin-torque oscillators based on a single MTJ with in-plane magnetization [2] show high frequency capabilities, but still need an...
متن کاملSelf-Injection Locking of a Vortex Spin Torque Oscillator by Delayed Feedback
The self-synchronization of spin torque oscillators is investigated experimentally by re-injecting its radiofrequency (rf) current after a certain delay time. We demonstrate that the integrated power and spectral linewidth are improved for optimal delays. Moreover by varying the phase difference between the emitted power and the re-injected one, we find a clear oscillatory dependence on the pha...
متن کاملPhase-Lock Requirements in a Serial Array of Spin Transfer Nano-Oscillators
The most promising approach to attain a narrow linewidth and a large output power simultaneously in spin torque oscillators is self-phase-locking of an array of oscillators. Two long range coupling mechanisms, magnetostatic interaction and self-induced current, are explored. Synchronization occurs with MR ratio ~ 14% and volume ~ 2.1 × 10(-5) μm(3) at room temperature for an experimental freque...
متن کاملNanowire spin torque oscillator driven by spin orbit torques.
Spin torque from spin current applied to a nanoscale region of a ferromagnet can act as negative magnetic damping and thereby excite self-oscillations of its magnetization. In contrast, spin torque uniformly applied to the magnetization of an extended ferromagnetic film does not generate self-oscillatory magnetic dynamics but leads to reduction of the saturation magnetization. Here we report st...
